Winter-season strawberries in 500 g retail punnets, 10 per carton, 12,000 kg per 40ft reefer. November to June, from partner farms in Ismailia.

Nothing else on our list declines as fast as a fresh strawberry. It has no skin worth the name, it respires hard, and every hour it spends warm after picking is taken directly off its shelf life at the other end. There is no step later in the chain that gives that time back.
So a fresh strawberry programme is really a logistics programme with fruit in it. The variety matters, the grade matters, but the thing that decides whether your punnets are saleable on arrival is what happened in the first few hours.
Fruit picked in the middle of the day carries field heat, and if that heat is not pulled out quickly the berry keeps ripening inside its own punnet all the way to the port. Pre-cooling before loading is not an optional refinement on this crop; it is the difference between fruit that arrives and fruit that arrives soft.
That is why we ask about your route before quoting rather than after. A short run to the Gulf and a four-week leg to a northern European port are not the same product decision, and on strawberries more than anything else we ship, the honest answer is sometimes that frozen is the better buy. The full argument is in our cold chain guide.
If the fruit is going into a product rather than onto a shelf — a bakery line, a dairy plant, a smoothie — then buying fresh and freezing it yourself, or shipping fresh over a long route at all, is usually the expensive way to do it. Our IQF frozen strawberries come off the same farms, go through the tunnel the same day they are picked, and hold twelve months.
We would rather tell you that before the first container than after. Fresh punnets are the right product for a retail shelf within reach; they are a difficult product at the end of a long route.
